By definition, e-shopping or popularly known as Online Shopping is a kind of electronic commerce which enables the consumer to buy products or services from a seller over the internet. Rather than going to the store and buying the product, you can directly buy the same product over the internet sitting at your home or anywhere else using the internet. Online shopping has grown exponentially throughout the world. According to a survey, more than 80% of the online population has used the internet to purchase something. As much as 50% of online population shopped online more than once. E-commerce sales in U.S.A are growing at 10% a year. India, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia are one of the fastest growing countries in E-commerce. In Western Europe, sales are expected to reach 14 billion Euros, a growth of 11% annually.
Why has it become a trend?
- Comfort – Now, we can shop from anywhere, be it office, home, etc. All we need is an Internet Connection and a device on which Internet can be accessed. The product will be delivered at your doorstep without any hassle of getting stuck in any crowded market. Also, the delivery time has been potentially reduced with the coming of new technologies.
- Massive Discounts and Low Prices – Online retailers offer massive discounts and low prices as compared to the offline market. This happens by eliminating the middleman, (who would physically set up a shop, which has added cost) selling online provides an extra degree of discounts for merchants. Other factors are also included. Nowadays there is heavy competition among online retailers. This also helps in bringing down prices.
- Variety of Products – There is a variety of products available online which we might not find in a particular shop or a market. We can compare the prices quickly without any hassle to roam around from one store to other. We can buy stuff that is not even available in our own country.
- Unique Products – We can get a variety of products that are limited to the online market, and we cannot buy those products offline. These products may include phones, laptops, clothes, etc.
How is Online Shopping affecting our daily life?
It has changed the way we go shopping. Where we used to go into town or to a regional shopping center, now we stay at home and surf the internet. Online Shopping has made accessing a variety of products easy. We are free from any kind of bargaining. Shorter delivery times have made online shopping even more popular. We are free from the crowd that we will typically found in a market or a more popular shop and we also get access to more than hundreds of products listed online. They are fewer chances of being cheated apart from cybercrime. (If you buy online from trusted sources such as Amazon, Flipkart, etc.) Shopping online has also become more comfortable since the integration of digital wallets like PayPal, Paytm, etc.
